Outside the Box

From the very beginning TV shows were a highly sensitive barometer tuned to reflect social change and cultural diversity. Due to its seasonal nature, the higher number of episodes and the short production cycle TV series’ allowed its creators to follow the ever-changing reality, to comment on it, and even – to create it. It was David Lynch, who in the early nineties has proven – with his genre bending “Twin Peaks” series – that the gateway to formal and aesthetic experiments is wide open. His approach would soon be followed by numerous daring creators, including Lars Von Trier, Paolo Sorrentino and Luca Guadagnino. The TV revolution of early 90s in the XX century introduced a so called quality TV era, rich with bold titles, difficult topics and diversity – in all of its aspects.

In an Outside the box section of the BNP Paribas Warsaw SerialCon Festival we will celebrate this diversity, giving voice to the female and queer creators – both in front of and behind the camera, creators who relentlessly introduce new, high standards in quality TV. We will talk non-binary takes, sexuality, breaking the mold, broadening horizons, neurodiversity and disabilities. Outside the box will focus on widening the strict borderlines, both formal and in terms of narrative tropes, in order to promote bold and non-typical creators. We will discuss messing with the classics, fighting the system, and encourage everything that reaches beyond the strict rules of a given genre.
