Old but gold, why we like to watch old series several times over and over again
Remember when… The humor was different, the characters better tailored, and the stories more interesting… Are we sure? What makes us continue to reach for the ones we know, despite the number of productions on the market? Why do we like to return to them? Are we addicted to nostalgia?
It seems that a series has already been created on almost every topic. There have been both funny and bitter, moody, and romantic, and obviously scary. We have already had superheroes and ordinary mortals. We have traveled far and local. Seemingly everything has already been, and yet still new and surprising productions are being made. Successive generations of filmmakers are faced with the task of telling a story in episodes so that you want to reach for each season. And after all, the choice is so large that you can easily turn on, watch, and forget, but we still stubbornly refuse to be tempted by new productions and like a mantra repeat the series that most appealed to us. We laugh for the umpteenth time at the same jokes, cry at the same moments, succumb to cliffhangers and let ourselves be swept away by the stories being told. How does this happen?
It seems that on the one hand the high quality of the material in question is responsible for this, but after all, this is not always the case either. Sometimes much simpler and lower-budget productions are much more appealing to us than the high-budget and intellectualized ones. Sometimes it’s the less award-winning ones that steal our hearts the most. Well, then, maybe it’s all about nostalgia after all? A series that harkens back to the years of our youth, or even tells a story partly about us, makes us start to romanticize it and consider it a tape from the family album. The characters along with whom we grew up become our soul mates, to whom we have a fondness like a colleague or friend from the school bench.
Or, perhaps, it is about something else entirely? The right series, watched at the right time, gives us a feeling of a certain comfort and warmth. It makes us feel good while watching it, and the fact that we are watching it for the umpteenth time only increases the feeling of that comfort, because no plot twist will surprise us. We sometimes forget that in all the rush of the modern world, our heads just need to rest and don’t need new stimuli. Feel-good series are a cure for the dynamic changes in our lives and allow us to simply relax. Because, after all, we don’t always need on-screen jump-scares or puzzles to solve. Sometimes we just want to go back to where we’ve already been.
